About the department

"Biomedical Engineering" is an application of all classical 'engineering principles' to solve clinical problems in medical and surgery. Biomedical engineers work with other healthcare professionals as members of a team. Employment opportunities for biomedical engineers exist in industry, government, universities, medical schools and hospitals.

The Department was established in the year 2004 with active clinical/industry partnership in association with our sister institution, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Institute, Kattankulathur. Since then, the department has been actively engaged in diversified research and teaching. Its main objective is to provide a knowledge-based, timely, cost effective and high quality service to clinicians in a professional and responsible manner, in order to improve and enhance patient care by supporting all aspects of care related technology. The department  offers B.Tech, M.Tech, and Ph.D programmes in Biomedical Engineering. The  students  of our department make a visit periodically to various departments of our sister medical institutions, and get a deep  knowledge about the existing medical devices and instruments. Further, the students carry out in-plant training at prestigious medical industry/institutions, located at various part of India, during their vacation. The Department has signed a MoU with IGCAR(Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research),kalpakkam  and Bharat Scans Pvt Ltd, Chennai for R& D Programmes

Vision of the Department:

To implement science and engineering principles in the broad area of medical instrumentation to improve healthcare delivery to human in association with physicians and surgeons;

Mission of the Programme:

Apply knowledge of engineering, biology, and biomechanical principles to the design, development, and evaluation of various medical devices for cost effective diagnosis and treatment of various ailments.

Program Objectives:

To prepare a student to be a Biomedical Engineer, Biomedical Application Specialist, Medical Device Entrepreneur, Biomedical Scientist and an Academician in Biomedical Engineering

Program Learning Objectives:

  • To understand anatomy and physiology of human.
  • To study principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment used in diagnosis and treatment.
  • To gain knowledge in assessment and evaluation of various diseases.
  • To design and deliver technology to assist people with disabilities.
  • To acquire the knowledge of material science for efficient design of biomedical implants.
  • To understand the application of electronics and computers in design and evaluate the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of biomedical equipments;
  • To analyze new medical procedures to forecast likely outcomes;
  • To conduct research, along with life scientists, chemists, and medical scientists, on the engineering aspects of the biological systems of humans towards the production of cost effective medical devices.

This program combines the academic & practical exposure required to pursue a career in the bio-medical field. Modules of this program train the student to plan, design, install, operate, and maintain complex systems that help medical practitioners in diagnosis and treatment of varied diseases.


The department consists of a good number of faculty members, who have experience in teaching, industry and research. The faculty members are well versed with current trends and technologies in the industry. Their sound technical knowledge helps in guiding the students in recent advances in the broad areas of biomedical engineering.


The thrust areas of Research for the Department of Biomedical Engineering, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) are:

Major Events & Achievements

The department conducts seminars, short-term training programs, workshops, conferences  and Social welfare camps regularly. Recently the department conducted a National Workshop, “Bioyantra 2012(September 6-8) and MED Expo” that connected the Academia, hospitals and industry. A National Seminar on “Medical thermography”, a National Conference titled "Improving Healthcare Using Sophisticated Biomedical Equipments" and a National Workshop on "Bone Densitometry" were also conducted. Renowned resource persons in various streams of biomedical engineering across India participated and delivered enlightening lectures. Under the 'Semester Abroad Program', 4 students have been sent to University of California - Davis, USA.

International Relations

The department is going to associate with University Hospital of Wales and Cardiff University, United Kingdom (UK) and Penn State University, United State of America (USA) for dual-degree program as well as research and development (R&D) activities.

Industrial training

Students are encouraged to undergo industrial training during the course of their study. Eminent resource persons from Industrial Units and institutions of higher learning are periodically invited to the Department for special lecturers on topics of current interest. The department also has an active clinical/industry partnership program that builds rapport with industry sources and focuses on maintaining contact with them. These contacts ensure students have no trouble when they seek practical exposure.


According to the recent survey in IEEE's Spectrum Magazine, "Biomedical Engineering is one of the best areas to work in". Biomedical engineers are expected to have employment growth that is much faster than the average for all other occupations. "The aging of people and the focus on health issues will drive demand for better medical devices and equipments designed by biomedical engineers". Students can look forward to many exciting careers in the manufacturing units of medical equipment companies, medical R&D institutions, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. The annual package offered to students placed in biomedical industry is about 7000 USD, on an average.
