About the department


Department of Physics and Nanotechnology is a part of the faculty of Engineering and Technology at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) Main campus, offers programs in Physics, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at bachelor, master and doctoral levels.


Physics is linked with the future progress of humankind and our students are prepared to be a part of it. Nanotechnology has developed into a large research area that often interacts strongly with other disciplines such as, e.g., materials science, the life sciences and electronics. Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary requiring expertise within physics, chemistry, biotechnology, mathematics, and materials science. Future engineers holding an interdisciplinary education are therefore invaluable in the process of solving many challenging materials problems present on the nanoscale.

Our students are educated in an innovative, dynamic and challenging environment through a combination of research based teaching, project work and a high degree of interaction with industry. We offer state-of-the-art laboratory facilities holding modern equipment for micro and nanoscale fabrication and characterization.

Department also offer the following courses supported with laboratory to all the majors of Engineering undergraduate programs:

The laboratory facilities have focused on the fundamental science in the physical and chemical processes in nanomaterials growth, nanosystems unique properties, novel in-situ measurement techniques and new applications of nanoscale objects including nanoelectronic simulation tools.

The students have also access to facilities at Nanotechnology Research Centre (NRC) in the university campus.

Major events & achievements 

The department regularly conducts various events to share and update the knowledge on recent developments with researchers in India and abroad. 

Events Conducted:

  • Refresher Course 2014.
  • DST- INSPIRE 2013.
  • International conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICONN 2013) in association with RIE, Shizuoka University - JAPAN, GNS - NEW ZEALAND and Asian Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Association – JAPAN.
  • Department of Atomic Energy, Govt of India− Solid State Symposium (DAE − SSPS) – 2011.
  • International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICONN 2010) in association with    Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research (IGCAR),Kalpakkam, Tami Nadu, India.

The department has funded projects from various agencies such as DST, DST-FIST, ISRO-ARFI, RESPOND, etc,. to the tune of Rs.1.27 Crores.

The Quanta Association is a forum for students to develop their professional skills and research aptitude. Weekly Research Colloquium organized by the department encourages young researchers and faculty to disseminate and enhance their knowledge and expertise in the upcoming fields. Students are also encouraged to do socially relevant research projects. Under the semester abroad program 7 students have been sent to American and European Universities.
